Youth Mentor

Kahu Youth Trust

Kahu Youth offers all youth of the Upper Clutha region opportunities for positive events, activities, programmes and support.
The youth workers provide organised, directed activities/events on a regular basis for youth aged 11-24 while incorporating a wide range of members of the local community.  They also provide positive channels through which young people may achieve success and gain recognition.  They advocate and encourage a voice for local youth.

Volunteers are sought to act as a mentor for year 10 students at MAC who have been identified by teachers, their parents peers or they’ve recommended themselves as seeming disconnected from the community or needing a little extra support or a ‘push’ to help fulfil their potential. This will be on a 1 on 1 basis a minimum of 1 hour per week during term time. The time and day is flexible upon prior arrangement with either Kahu Youth or the young person involved. This is not a scheme for only at risk, special needs or those young people deemed as ‘trouble’, it will contain a broad cross section of the year group.

We will provide full support throughout the time of the pairing to both the volunteer and the young person, and will provide more detailed information on the role, confidentiality and the procedures to follow should anything unexpected happen.

We hope volunteers will really enjoy their role and establish great relationships with the young people in the Upper Clutha.

We require volunteers that are 20yrs and older.

As each pairing will be dependent on the needs and requirements of the individual young person, any skill could be of use, from landscape gardening to accounting, we may need them all!

The main skills / attributes required by all volunteers are:

Patience, self-confidence and be able to listen; confidentiality, honesty and integrity with a strong interest in helping young people achieve their potential.

Being a driver is useful but not essential.

A Police background check is required for this role.

1 hour a week during term time, usually taking place outside of school hours. 6 – 12 months commitment required.
