Youthline is a "with youth, for youth" organisation that supports young people throughout Aotearoa New Zealand. They provide support to Kiwis aged between 12-24. They support young people who are struggling with mental health and other issues, as well as those young people who want to learn and grow. All helpline counsellors go through training and attend supervision to ensure they are skilled and supported in this rewarding role.

Youthline offers a free Helpline service (text, phone, webchat & email), free face-to-face counselling services, youth mentoring, programmes in schools and communities to help people grow and develop. They also provide their volunteers with resources and opportunities.

They are looking for those who are:

  • Compassionate and enthusiastic people
  • Aged 18 and over to become helpline counsellors
  • Able to complete the Helpline counsellor training (at Youthline Otago)
  • Willing to be supported by clinical supervision
  • Want to deliver direct help to those in need
  • Wanting to learn indispensable skills that assist individuals to grow and develop

Requirements

  • A good listener, patient, non-judgemental, supportive
  • A good communicator
  • Commitment, enthusiasm and compassion
  • Complete Youthline Otago’s training - Prerequisite
  • Travel costs will be reimbursed
  • Police Check

(Training is held each year and consists of a Noho Marae weekend 3 hours weekly online learning for 6 weeks, with a 2½ hour in person at the end of each week).

A Police background check is required for this role.

Time commitment

  • Negotiable - Helpline shifts are 3 hours long
  • It is expected that volunteers will complete 2-3 shifts per month
  • 1½ hours per month for supervision
  • A minimum commitment of 1 year
  • Youthline Otago training consists of a Noho Marae weekend
  • Six 2½ hour in person sessions spread over 6 weeks in addition to 20 hours of online content broken up to about 3 hours a week
