This position is mainly assisting the toy librarian in their duties.

The role consists of:-

  • Scanning toys onto the computer to return it to the library
  • Counting the toys’ pieces to make all have been returned
  • Making a note of any damaged or missing pieces and placing toy aside for librarian
  • Shelving toy in correct locations in library
  • Checking shelves to make sure toys are in correct positions and that shelves are tidy and clean
  • Answering any enquiries members may have
  • Help keep library clean and tidy on a regular basis


  • The volunteer must be reliable. If you don’t turn up for toy sessions (unless otherwise arranged previously), the librarian cannot open the library on their own due to safety/security reasons.
  • Some computer knowledge would be an advantage although the database we use is very basic and could be learned quickly
  • Patience - some of the toys have a lot of pieces and you need to count them slowly and carefully.
  • A friendly and approachable manner - As a regular member of the toy library, the you will often be in contact with members of the public
  • Cash handling experience - not essential as this will be included in training
  • There will be onsite training from the Toy Librarian for the library’s database. the Toy Librarian will always be onsite for supervision.
  • This appointment is conditional on the successful completion of a Police Vet Check as you will be working with children it is a condition of employment at our Toy Library. This position would suit someone who lived in South Dunedin as this is where the library is situated.

A Police background check is required for this role.

Time commitment

Thursdays and Saturdays 10 to 12pm. There may be some irregular hours in November and early December for annual stocktake.
