Living Legends aims to transform the low-lying rank pasture into a thriving natural wetland, much like it might have been more than 150 years ago. by establishing and growing native plantings, the restored habitat at Orokonui Scenic Reserve will link the Orokonui Ecosanctuary (307 ha of 100-year-old regenerating forest) with Blueskin Bay to created a single 'mountains to sea' ecosystem of indigenous vegetation that provides a foraging habitat for Orokonui birds.

The Orokonui Scenic Reserve is a 28-ha tidal estuary at the base of Orokonui Valley and the southern reach of Blueskin Bay. It is important for whitebait and wading birds, and is a peaceful recreation area for the residents of Waitati.

In this role you will be:

  • Working alongside others
  • Performing maintenance tasks on an area of plants
  • Working on uneven surfaces
  • Engaging in hand weeding
  • Replacing and turning weed mats
  • Using loppers, pruning saws and spades
  • Performing other related plant management tasks
  • You can work at a pace that suits you (all ages welcome)

Requirements

  • Motivated to improve the environment and restore habitat through plant management
  • Fitness level: Low - medium (Care should be taken lifting, bending and walking on uneven surfaces & gradients)
  • Please bring: Warm/waterproof clothing, sunscreen and sunhat, sturdy shoes. Bring water to drink
  • Transport is Available: You need to book in advance with the organiser
    (Transport departs the Otago University Bookshop - 378 Great King Street at 9.40am)
  • Alternatively, volunteers can meet at Waitati at 10:00am. Sites in Waitati vary and will be advised by email prior to each mahi/work day)

Time commitment

  • Work days take place on Sundays between 10am and 12noon (September to May)
  • Dates will be advised by email prior to each mahi/work day
