Volunteer Drivers

Blind Low Vision NZ are New Zealand’s leading provider of vision rehabilitation, providing practical and emotional support for people with vision loss.

When given an assignment by the Recreation and Volunteer Coordinator, drivers will be required to call the clients prior to the appointment to confirm the pick up time and location. Drivers will then drop clients off at the required venue by the stipulated time. A return trip home is usually required too.

On some occasions clients may have walking frames or Guide Dogs too.

Requirements

We are looking for volunteers who are a confident, safe and considerate driver. Volunteers should also:

  • Have good communication and listening skills
  • Have a good knowledge of the local area
  • Be empathetic and patient

All drivers will have ongoing support from the Recreation and Volunteer Coordinator and offered a volunteer induction to Blind Low Vision NZ, covering sighted guiding of and engaging with blind and low vision persons.

Applicants must have the use of own vehicle and a clean, Full New Zealand Drivers Licence.

For the use of your own vehicle the Blind Low Vision NZ will offer reimbursement of 76c per km travelled during an assignment.

A Police background check is required for this role.

Time commitment

Assignments can be negotiated, either regular or ad-hoc depending on your availability. We generally operate between 8.30am - 5.00pm weekdays. Driving assignments are usually within the local area only
