Central Stories Museum and Art Gallery

The Central Stories Museum and Art Gallery showcases the unique stories of Central Otago. These stories include geology, early explorers, social history, gold, dredging & mining, farming, orcharding, viticulture and many more besides. As the guardians of Central Otago's rich heritage, their philosophy is to care for the cultural well-being of their community and provide the best experience they can – for locals and visitors alike.

It is the responsibility of present and future members of Central Stories to preserve and foster interest in the heritage of the distant and recent past through the acquisition and conservation of artefacts, archival records and artworks.

Central Stories hosts a wide variety of travelling art and cultural exhibitions which need installing and disassembling.  This role involves assisting with the associated tasks such as carpentry, painting, labelling, checking, packaging, wrapping, displaying etc.

This is your opportunity to see how Central Stories works on a day to day basis and be more involved in the community and our heritage. Each exhibition has new material to peruse and interest you.  You will have the ability to share your skills and work co-cooperatively in a team with others.

As a volunteer you are considered an important part of the Central Stories staff and will be entitled to all staff privileges including a 10% discount in our shop and invitations to all our exclusive events.

Ideal volunteers will have:

  • A practical mind and can do attitude
  • Physical ability and handyman skills useful but not essential
  • Good attention to detail, a good listener and pride in work undertaken
  • An interest in and willingness to positively promote Central Stories to the community

Time commitment

The exhibitions usually rotate on a 7-10 week cycle.  Each cycle will require help for approximately 2 days depending on the size, materials and packing requirements.
