Alzheimers Otago is launching a new service to the Oamaru community where we will provide community based activities and programmes for people living with dementia in Oamaru and North Otago. The service will largely reach people in the early stages of dementia and help them to keep their brain active, continue to contribute to their community and to connect them to others in the same situation.
The core service will be Cognitive Stimulation Therapy (CST) a group programme for a small groups of people with mild to moderate dementia that runs twice a week for 7 weeks. As a volunteer, you would help with the preparation and set up of the sessions and help our Activities Coordinator to deliver the sessions and activities with the clients.
Over time, we will also deliver other "one-off" activities with our clients, such as art classes, gardening, woodwork or other activities based on what our clients interests are. Our volunteers will also help with these sessions, including setting up and packing down and supporting the Activities Coordinator to deliver the sessions.
Of course, you may have special skills that you could share with our clients! If this is the case we would also welcome you to also lead an activity with the group from time to time.
There are two types of volunteers required - one that can help with the sessions for 7 weeks, and one-off opportunities. Please specify which role you would be most interested in when applying.
Approximately 2-4 hrs a week, but this would vary depending on what activities are scheduled.
The first step is to express your interest by filling out the form below. We will then put you in touch directly with the organisation for more information on the role and how to proceed.
