The Salvation Army has been fighting poverty, social and spiritual distress in New Zealand since 1883. They treat people with the care and dignity they deserve. They are committed to finding practical responses to human needs. Their reward is seeing individuals, families and communities change for the better. The Red Shield Appeal is a week where they focus on raising the much needed funds to enable us to keep helping those in need.

All funds raised from the Red Shield Appeal go to the frontline work and services of The Salvation Army in New Zealand including The Bridge Program (addiction help), Transitional Housing, and to providing welfare, social support and counselling services in our local communities.

In 2023, The Salvation Army Queenstown responded to more than 300 requests for help. This included:

  • 143 food parcels or welfare assistance of clothing/household items
  • 42 families graduated from our SPACE parenting programme
  • We had 27 people attend our free counselling services
  • Assisted 50 families with food and gifts at Christmas time
  • Over 50 people took part in our Positive Lifestyle Programme

Nationally, they've helped more than 150,000 people

  • 4685 people received support for harm from alcohol and/or other drugs
  • We provided 83,000 food parcels to 36,000 households
  • 500 people were supported while on bail, or on release from prison
  • 445,000 bed nights were provided
  • 2300 households were provided with housing
  • 1900 people received help for problem gambling

They wouldn't be able to meet this growing need without the support of the community, especially their dedicated and valued volunteers who collect during our Red Shield Appeal. From 6th - 11th May. Help with collections at various locations around Queenstown and Wanaka.
