“You can’t beat the rewarding feeling you get from volunteering at a place like this. It connects you to others and offers great fulfilment. It’s wonderful to be part of such a caring team.” - Mavis, Ronald McDonald Family Room volunteer.

Ronald McDonald Family Room is situated onsite at Southland Hospital, just metres from the Neonatal and Children’s Wards. It acts as a haven for families to stay, rest, eat and meet whilst being only steps away from their child’s hospital bed. By removing the stressors of everyday life, we give families the ability to focus on what matters most – their child; and what they need most – each other. It’s only through the generous support of our community that we can continue to keep our doors open to families that need us.

Every year around 120 families stay with us, and thousands more utilise the facility as day guests. The Family Room features four overnight bedrooms with ensuites as well as a kitchen, dining room, lounge, laundry and an outdoor courtyard. Our volunteers play an important role and are a valued part of the team. Their roles cover a wide and varied range of tasks including:

  • Daily cleaning of communal living areas; kitchen; dining room; living room
  • Cleaning and preparing bedrooms for guest use
  • Assisting with restocking of snacks, baking buffet or stock as required
