Age Concern Queenstown provides support, information, education and advocacy for people living in the Wakatipu basin who are 65 years and older.
They hold three social/coffee groups each month; two general ones (though mostly ladies) – in Arrowtown and Frankton – and one just for the men – in Frankton. All the arrangements will be made by Age Concern.
Volunteers are needed to help host these social groups through transportation and conversation. You may be required to transport older persons to and from the venue (cafes and a pub), and some of these people may have mobility problems (e.g. use a walking frame or walking stick). Will need to ensure the clients get safely in and out of the vehicle, and are transported safely. In practice this means shadowing them in and out of the vehicle, (in case they fall) and passing them the seat belt (as they may not be able to reach that far back). Preferably the volunteer will be able to have a wee chat with the person while driving.
At the venue, ensure the person gets safely from the vehicle to the venue (e.g. stop traffic if need be, help them up and down steps, or over rough ground). Also at the venue, chatting to the older people that may be slow to engage, and ensure that they enjoy the event.
This role will ensure the volunteer gains satisfaction in knowing they are making a different to the older people's lives; minimising their social isolation and a chance to connect with the older generation in the community.
A love of older people and community connection
