Client Visitor: Provide companionship. Take the client for a drive. Undertake occasional errands with client. Help with variety of practical tasks, i.e. return books to library, post mail, etc., but not including housework, nursing care, financial/legal advice, cooking meals, money handling or medical advice.

Client Driver: Provide an efficient safe driving transport service for Cancer Society clients to appointments or support groups. Contact clients the night before to confirm transport arrangements. Collect the client from their home allowing enough time to travel to the appointment at a comfortable, safe speed arriving in time. Escort the client, when appropriate, to the reception area and/or waiting areas. Collect the client at the completion of treatment and drive them home again, (unless it is a one way drive by arrangement).

Gardener: Occasional help with small gardening jobs or other practical assistance for clients.

Requirements

  • Ability to work comfortably with people of all social, religious and cultural backgrounds
  • Understand and respect the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi
  • Ability to maintain boundaries and respect confidentiality
  • A caring and sensitive manner
  • Understanding the needs of those being treated by cancer
  • Flexible and reliable
  • Ability to listen
  • If driving; Maintain a full NZ driver’s licence, with no serious history of infringements of the law and access to a vehicle that is road-worthy, registered, insured and has a current Warrant of Fitness.

All volunteering roles will be conducted under Cancer Society Covid -19 guidelines, following advice from the Ministry of Health and the NZ Government.
Cancer Society Staff will advise you of the guidelines that are in place at the time of your engagement.

A Police background check is required for this role.
