Dementia Friendly Reading Group Assistant

Volunteer duties include assisting a library staff member to facilitate a reading group for up to 5 to 6 people with dementia.

Reading groups for dementia sufferers are planned for the City Library, Mosgiel Library, and Waikouaiti library (and potentially other libraries in the Dunedin Public Libraries system). The one-hour long meeting will take place during a week day (yet to be decided), between the hours of 10am and 3pm.

You will help set up morning or afternoon tea (depending on Covid-19 settings), communicate with group attendees and their caregivers, assist people with reading, and be willing to read aloud and take part in discussions sparked by stories in the texts. You will gain confidence and experience working with vulnerable and mostly older people.

Requirements

If you love reading and think you would enjoy reading aloud.
Ability to work as part of a team.
Have some experience, working with older people.
Excellent communication skills.

Masks are required to be worn.

A Ministry of Justice background check is required for this role.

Time commitment

1.5 hours per week (or per fortnight) Depends on each group/library - group may decide to meet weekly or fortnightly.
