The Major Incident Support Team has the important task of ensuring that St John | Hato Hone is providing a world-leading response to major incidents and large events. They are looking for non-clinical people to deploy and assist the Ambulance Operations and Event Health Services teams.
As a MIST member, your role will be:
- to provide support at planned events (sporting events, festivals, concerts)
- to provide support during unplanned events in times of crisis and high workload (natural disasters and other major incidents)
- carry out radio communications and work side by side with other agencies
Ideally you must live in the town (or within a short driving distance of) to be considered for this role. They will not be able to consider those outside of town due to the potential emergency response nature of this role.
There are 4 major areas where you can be involved (but may not be required at each event):

- Administration - Tracking patients, staff and vehicles, making sure all the paperwork is done.

- Communications - Specialist communications within a Command Unit at an incident and/or between the incident and an Emergency Operations Centre or Ambulance Communications Centre.

- Welfare - Looking after Staff that are working - keeping them fed, watered and mentally well.

- Logistics - Moving and setting up infrastructure- moving vehicles, driving between sites, setting up tents
Some of your key tasks may include (but are not limited) to the following:
- Ensuring all operations vehicles and equipment and Major Incident equipment are maintained to a state of operational readiness
- Relocating vehicles
- Responding to major incident and filling the CIMS 'Logistics' & 'Welfare' roles
- Establishing the Scene Command Point and any Incident Command Post / Emergency Operations Centre Duties
- Provide communications and logistical support at significant events.
You will complete a full training (provided) before you begin in the role, and continue on a monthly basis, at a minimum. Support is provided throughout your training and volunteering to make you safe and effective in the field.
Requirements
Our ideal candidates have:
- A current, clean full NZ Driver's Licence class 1 required, with the ability to drive both automatic and manual vehicles confidently.
- A First Aid certificate
- An ability to work as part of a team as well as independently
- A strong communication skills and high level of attention to detail
- Are flexible, resilient and fun and able to maintain performance under pressure
- Are physically fit
- Demonstrate behaviours that align with Hato Hone St John's core values - Do the right thing, Side by side, Straight up, Make it better, Open minds
These are not clinical roles, but important support roles, so an ATP (Authority to Practice) is not required.
Please note: Appointments are subject to satisfactory completion of checks including, but not limited to a physical assessment and health check. This does include those that may already be a current Hato Hone St John member.
A Police background check is required for this role.
Time commitment
- The time commitment varies as you respond to emergencies, like if there was flooding or an earthquake.
- You must be available for training both before the role as well as on a monthly basis.
