Family Works Emergency Foodbank is run by Presbyterian Support, and is located at 407 Moray Place. It is the busiest foodbank in Dunedin and supports the wider Otago region. Foodbank volunteers are the unseen heroes of the foodbank, putting together up to 400 food parcels each month, and counting, sorting and stacking over 15,000 items.

Your time will make an immediate difference to people who are in need and are struggling with the rising costs of living and who find themselves in need of the emergency foodbank. Volunteers are an integral part of the foodbank which is part of the wider wrap-around services Family Works provides across the Otago region.

What would you do?

  • Count and record food donations
  • Sort and put away donations
  • Unload and carry bulk donations
  • Assist with Foodbank events
  • Break down bulk donations into smaller quantities
  • Prepare individual and family emergency food parcels
  • Manage and move stock from the storage areas to the pantry
  • Be reliable and dedicated
  • Follow instructions and processes set out by staff

Training and support: You will receive a full orientation and training, and you will always be working alongside the foodbank coordinator during the train period.

Please note: Due to limited space in the pantry you will need to be able to work independently and individually.

Requirements

This role is perfect for someone who is:

  • Up for a physical challenge
  • Strong and capable of lifting heavy donations
  • Physically capable of pushing a heavy trolley, pulling sack barrows, walking up and down stairs
  • Capable of standing for long periods, lifting over head, bending, twisting and working in a small space
  • Friendly, reliable and trustworthy
  • Good with interpersonal communication skills
  • Enjoys working in a team
  • Able to commit to a weekly Friday roster
  • Willing to sign the code of conduct
  • Able to follow instructions and processes

Family Works take great care in choosing their volunteers, you will need to complete a Police Check and provide references.

A Police background check is required for this role.

Time commitment

Two or three hours on Fridays, at a time that suits you between 10am and 3pm. You will be required on a weekly basis.
