Working Hours

Locations:

Dunedin

Cancer Society understands how a diagnosis can affect every aspect of a person's life, and how it can also affect their family/whanau and friends around them. Their commitment is to help people get through.

Daffodil House provides accommodation to people travelling to Dunedin for cancer treatment. They have a small but much enjoyed garden with a small lawn and flower beds. If the garden gets a monthly tidy up it helps to keep it looking lovely for the residents throughout the year. Each year Cancer Society sets up a monthly roster of approximately 4 people who can come in from time to time to keep Daffodil House's garden looking tidy. With spring upon us, Cancer Society would love to build a small team of volunteers to help with this task. The work usually involves 1 to 2 hours of light gardening duties around a small lawn.

In this role you will:

  • Work alongside others
  • Push an electric mower over a small, flat lawn
  • Engage in weeding activities
  • Perform light grounds tidying tasks

Volunteers will gain:

  • Initial orientation
  • The appreciation of Cancer Society staff and the Daffodil House residents
  • The knowledge that they are serving their community by supporting people in their time of need to enjoy a beautiful garden

Requirements

  • Happy to push an electric lawn mower (all flat)
  • Some weeding, tidying and light lifting
  • Bending, kneeling, twisting, clasping, pushing and some small lifting is involved
  • Basic general knowledge of garden plants a bonus. I.e. Is this a plant or a weed!?
  • You can bring your own gloves if you prefer
  • All the tools and an electric mower available on site
  • Suitable footwear
  • A hat, sun protection and something to drink

Time commitment

1 - 2 hours every couple of months
