Tēnā koutou to all and Happy 2020!
2020 proves to be a big year for Volunteering Otago and we are so looking forward to the challenges and opportunities that are coming up for us! We have a bigger team of staff and volunteers, plus new programmes and places to be – there is lots to plan throughout the year and we would be appreciative of any and all support that the community gives us. After all – we’re here for you!
Leaders of Volunteers is back! This training and networking opportunity is for managers of volunteers and is aimed at supporting the community with the issues facing the sector. It’s free, it’s about connectedness and it can count towards your professional development. Bonus is that you get to spend time with other volunteering organisations, and share your great ideas because Dunedin is BRILLIANT at ideas.
Volunteering NZ, the overarching volunteer organisation that looks after all volunteer organisations – from small not-for-profits through to volunteer centres like Volunteering Otago – has been working with volunteer centres across the country to deliver workshops for new migrants and former refugees in NZ to reduce the barriers to volunteering in NZ. Volunteering Otago in Dunedin will be delivering their first workshops for both new arrivals as well as organisations that work with volunteers in late March. This has been made possible with generous funding from Volunteering NZ, as well as a dedicated intern through the Ministry of Social Development to research and develop the programme beyond the workshops. Casey Lochead, who joined us first as a volunteer at Volunteering Otago, and now as the Migration Volunteer Programme Coordinator, has been working hard to ensure a well-rounded and evidence based support system for recent arrivals in their volunteering. We are so appreciative of all that you are doing!

This year also marks 34 years that Volunteering Otago has been operating in Dunedin, and – even more phenomenally – 25 years of our Supported Volunteering Programme. This year will be bigger than ever, as we will be rebranding the organisation, and to celebrate all these things (and more!), we will have an official launch of our name on June 22nd, at the start of National Volunteer Week. It’s bound to be a big week for us, with many events planned so keep an eye out, follow our Facebook, Instagram or LinkedIn page for more details as they come!
Finally, we will be at Thieves Alley marketplace on the 15th of November, so please come and see us, and say hello. We will have an interactive stall where people can take photos and upload to their social media, as well as different ways you can register your interest in volunteering. It’s an event we are very much looking forward to and we’d love to see you there!
Noho ora mai. Take care and enjoy the rest of summer!
