Alan Somerville

Alan has been chair of Abbeyfield Dunedin since 2012, and elected Otago Regional Councillor representing the Dunedin constituency since 2022. His connections with many environmental and community groups are valuable in his role as councillor.
He has had a long career in the early childhood sector, as Playcentre kaiako and early childhood teacher, and a stint at the Education Review Office. That included governance roles for Playcentre regionally and nationally.
Alan recognises the huge contribution volunteers make to the wellbeing of communities and the environment. He has experienced volunteering at different levels, most notably all those parents when he was an advisor for Playcentres throughout Otago. Nowadays he is a trapline volunteer for City Sanctuary and weekly playgroup leader at the Dunedin Parents Centre.
