Parkrun Support Crew

parkrun organise free, weekly, 5km timed walks, runs around the world. They are open to everyone, free, and are safe and easy to take part in. These events take place in pleasant parkland surroundings and they encourage people of every ability to take part; from those taking their first steps in their wellbeing journey to experienced walkers or runners, from young to seniors; they welcome you all.

parkrun started in 2004 in London with a group of friends and it has grown to over 8 million registered participants.

Otago Central Rail Trail, Alexandra parkrun starts opposite 157 Dunstan Rd.

A minimum of 7 volunteers are needed each week to assist on event day but they welcome extras as helping hands are always great. As a volunteer you can help with all or some of the following tasks:

  • Setting up the course 20 minutes prior to the start time (putting out cones and signage, checking the track for hazards)
  • Marshalling on the course, ensuring participants take the right turns/direction
  • Operating the stopwatch to time finishers
  • Barcode scanning at the finish line
  • Photographing participants around the course
  • Being a tail-walker to ensure all participants finish safely and collecting cones/markers following the last runner/walker

What you can expect as a volunteer:

  • You will work alongside the Run Directors to deliver an efficient, safe and fun event each week.
  • No skills required - all training provided.
  • The opportunity to be part of a free, fun and friendly community event.

Requirements

Volunteers aged 12+ who have:

  • An interest or passion in community events and running/walking/fitness/wellbeing/community connection.
  • A friendly personality with the ability to show initiative. 
  • Any relevant experience related to the tasks would be gratefully accepted.
  • Above all, a willingness and enthusiasm to share the parkrun spirit!

There are no physical requirements and there is good wheelchair/mobility scooter access for volunteers.

Time commitment

  • Saturday mornings for 1.5 hours, starting 20 minutes before the parkrun starts at 8am (or 9am in the winter).
  • Great flexibility with roster - you choose which weeks you can volunteer. Once every 4-6 weeks is really helpful.

Volunteer South's office is closed from Friday 20th December until Monday January 6th. Many organisations listing roles online will also be taking a break. During this time your requests to connect will go through, however there may be some delay in you hearing from the organisations you select.
