IHC supports people with intellectual disabilities to live full and meaningful lives in the community.
Their Friendship Programme in Invercargill is seeking a Supportive Older Peer to join a small group of young adults (women and men) with intellectual disability and neurodivergent profiles on Monday evenings. This role is about building connection, not authority.
As a Supportive Older Peer, you will join group activities such as games nights, bowling and other activities that the participants already enjoy, spend time alongside them, and build trust naturally.
You are not expected to teach, direct, or fix problems. Instead, you will be a calm, reliable presence — someone who listens, encourages strengths, and supports confidence, independence, and shared interests at a pace chosen by the group.
If you enjoy forming genuine connections and making a difference simply by showing up, they would love to hear from you.
The role suits someone who:
Police vetting, referee checks and interview are required.
A Police background check is required for this role.
2 hours a week on Monday evenings
The first step is to express your interest by filling out the form below. We will then put you in touch directly with the organisation for more information on the role and how to proceed.
