Working Hours

Locations:

Alzheimers Otago has been supporting people living with dementia and their families across the Otago region since 1985. Their Queenstown programme, In Good Company, brings small groups of people living with mild to moderate dementia together fortnightly for a morning of activities, conversation, good food, and genuine connection.

Built on Cognitive Stimulation Therapy (CST), the only non-drug treatment recommended in international clinical guidelines for dementia, In Good Company helps participants stay mentally active, socially connected, and living well at home for longer. It also gives carers a much-needed few hours of respite.

As an In Good Company Programme Assistant, you will:

  • Work alongside the Programme Coordinator to create warm, enjoyable, and meaningful sessions.
  • Support 6–10 participants with activities such as meditation, mindfulness, music, creative projects, and gentle movement.
  • Engage participants in friendly, natural conversation about life, memories, and current events.
  • Help with simple setup and pack-down before and after sessions.

All relevant training is provided through induction with our certified CST Coordinator. No prior experience with dementia is required, just a willingness to learn and show up with warmth.

The benefits for you:

  • Make a genuine, visible difference to some of the most vulnerable members of our community.
  • Build knowledge and confidence working alongside people living with dementia.
  • Be part of a warm, close-knit team doing meaningful work.
  • Enjoy morning tea and lunch, provided at every session.
  • Receive references for those pursuing careers in health, social work, psychology, or community services.

Requirements

  • Warm, patient, and people-oriented.
  • Comfortable engaging in relaxed conversation and light group activities, no personal cares required.
  • Reliable and consistent, participants thrive on familiar faces.
  • Own transport to get to the venue in Queenstown.
  • Willing to complete a short induction training with the Programme Coordinator.
  • Ideally able to commit to a minimum of six months.
  • Experience with older people or those living with dementia is an advantage but absolutely not essential.

A Police background check is required for this role.
