Treasurer

Serving the Otago community since 1989, Livingwell Disability Resource Centre provides free disability information and advice and access to resources that support independent living.

The Treasurer is responsible for overseeing the financial management and reporting of Livingwell. The role ensures that the organisation maintains sound financial practices, meets all statutory and charitable reporting obligations, and provides accurate financial information to support effective governance and decision-making.

The Treasurer works closely with the Manager, Chairperson, Executive Committee, Auditor, and external stakeholders to ensure the financial sustainability and compliance of Livingwell.

Key Responsibilities:

Financial Governance

  • Provide financial oversight and advice to the Executive Committee.
  • Monitor the financial health of Livingwell and identify any financial risks.
  • Ensure financial policies and procedures are followed.
  • Assist the Executive Committee with long-term financial planning and sustainability.

Financial Reporting

  • Prepare and present monthly financial reports to Executive Committee meetings.
  • Monitor income, expenditure, cash flow, and budget performance.
  • Provide commentary and recommendations regarding financial performance.
  • Assist the Executive Committee in developing and monitoring annual budgets.

Accounting Systems

  • Oversee the use of Xero accounting software.
  • Ensure financial transactions are accurately recorded and reconciled.
  • Work with the Manager to maintain appropriate financial controls and documentation.
  • Liaise with the Manager regarding payroll, GST, and annual financial statements as required.

Charities Services Compliance

  • Ensure compliance with New Zealand Charities Services reporting requirements.
  • Coordinate preparation of annual performance reports and financial statements under Tier 3 reporting standards.
  • Ensure annual returns are completed and submitted on time.
  • Maintain records required to meet charitable and incorporated society regulatory obligations.

Annual Accounts and Audit

  • Lead preparation of end-of-year financial reports.
  • Coordinate the annual audit or review process.
  • Act as the primary liaison with the auditor.
  • Ensure recommendations arising from audits are addressed where appropriate.

Support to the Manager

  • Provide financial guidance and support to the Manager.
  • Assist with funding applications, budgets, and financial reporting requirements for grants.
  • Support development of financial systems and processes.
  • Provide advice on contractual and financial matters when required.

Present financial reports and answer questions from Executive Committee members.

Attend the Annual General Meeting and present the annual financial report.

Participate in relevant Executive Committee meetings as required.

Requirements

  • Experience in financial management, accounting, bookkeeping, and governance.
  • Ability to understand and interpret financial reports.
  • Familiarity with budgeting and cash-flow management.
  • Experience using Xero accounting and Lightspeed software.
  • Good organisational and communication skills.
  • Commitment to the mission and values of Livingwell.
  • Desirable Skills and Experience
  • Knowledge of New Zealand charitable sector financial reporting.
  • Experience with Tier 3 reporting requirements.
  • Experience working with not-for-profit organisations.
  • Understanding of grant funding accountability and reporting.

Time commitment

  • Attend Executive Committee meetings, the third Monday of each month for one hour and an annual strategic planning day.
  • Approximately 3-5 hours per month.
  • Attendance at monthly Executive Committee meetings.
  • Additional time required during annual reporting, audit, and budget preparation periods.
