Calling Repair Heroes!

Organisation:

Wastebusters Ltd

Category:

Events

Hours:

Evenings/Weekends

Locations:

Wānaka, Queenstown

Repair Revolution is a programme of work funded by QLDC’s Zero Waste District programme and delivered by Wānaka Wastebusters & Sustainable Queenstown. It aims to foster a culture of repair in our community to help reduce the amount of waste being sent to landfill, so whether you are a skilled sewer, an electrician who likes to tinker, or just great at DIY, come and join the Repair Revolution. General event crew are also welcome!

How it works:

  • Members of the community are invited to bring broken household items such as clothes, accessories, furniture, electronics, appliances, toys, bikes, tools, etc.
  • They are directed to the appropriate Repair Hero (that's you!) to see if the item can be fixed.
  • You can provide advice on how to fix it (if not fixable on the spot), or show them how to fix it.
  • The idea is to share skills on repair, as well as care and maintenance to prolong the life of these items, saving them from landfill.

If you're keen to be a general event helper you will:

  • Arrive early to help with setting up the space
  • Greet people as they arrive and collect information about their broken items
  • Escort them to the repairer who can help them
  • Ensure you collect information about whether the item was fixed
  • Request feedback from attendees
  • Check in with fixers if they need a cuppa or snacks

What will be provided:

  • Wanaka Repair events are held at the Wanaka Community Workshop/Fabricate, and there are a number of sewing machines and a wide range of tools available to carry out most repairs, but if you have your own specialist equipment you are most welcome to bring it with you.
  • Queenstown Repair Events are held at a number of different venues and you'll have access to a repair trailer for tools and some material, but if you have your own sewing machine or specialist equipment, please do bring it along.
  • Lunch and refreshments are provided for all event volunteers

Regular repairers will tell you that these repair events are not only great fun, but hugely satisfying. When people walk away with treasured items restored - whether a favourite toy, or a priceless family heirloom, or a special travel souvenir - their gratitude is genuine! You can be a part of this fantastic event where repair culture is promoted in a positive way, skills are shared and passed on, all to change community mindset while reducing landfill waste.

Requirements

  • Fixing skills- whether amateur or professional - all levels are welcome
  • Creative, resourceful thinking and problem solving mindset
  • A willingness to share your knowledge and skills
  • A genuine interest in improving sustainability in the community
  • Enjoy working alongside other repairers - sometimes collaboration is required for fixing items!

Time commitment

You can choose to be a repair volunteer at any of the following events. Repairers are asked to arrive 30-45 minutes prior to the event commencing so that you have time to set-up your equipment and receive a brief induction. Allow time for pack-up at the end as well.

  • Repair Event 1 - Wānaka - 22/9/2024 - 10:00am - 2:00pm
  • Repair Event 2 - Queenstown - 28/9/2024 - 10:00am - 2:00pm
  • Repair Event 3 - Wānaka - 10/11/2024 - 10:00am - 2:00pm
