The MenzShed brings men together in one community space to share their skills, have a laugh, and work on practical tasks individually (personal projects) or as a group (for the shed or community). There is a range of ages and skills of men attending the Menzshed - everyone has some skills to share with other like-minded people.
The Invercargill MenzShed has an extensive workshop with woodwork and joinery tools and equipment as well as engineering and electrical corners. The types of projects the Menz Shed takes on range from building playgrounds, planter boxes, and picnic tables, to repairing toy library items or carrying out maintenance at Deep Cove Hostel – and the list goes on.
The Mentors support members of the MenzShed in the planning and execution of carpentry or metalwork related projects.
The Mentors role involves any, some, or all, of the following:
- Providing hands-on guidance, training, and encouragement to members.
- Supporting skill development for members of all experience levels.
- Promoting safe work practices and proper use of tools and equipment.
- Liaising with community groups and organisations for project requests including designs and quotes.
- Planning and overseeing group carpentry or engineering projects from inception to completion.
- Allocating group tasks to members based on their skills, interests, and experience.
- Ensuring all work complies with relevant health and safety standards and MenzShed policies.
- Providing the committee with information required for invoices, and funding applications.
- General administration – job sheets, invoicing, pricing etc.

Requirements
- Carpentry, woodworking or metalwork experience (professional or hobbyist).
- A practical, safety-conscious mindset.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills.
- Patience, approachability, and a willingness to mentor others.
- Organised, reliable, and community orientated.
Time commitment
- Flexible, 3-6 hours/week
- The Shed is open:
Monday 1pm - 4pm
Wednesday 9am - 4pm
Saturday 9am - 12pm
