The CREST Charity Train, fondly known as Bluebell, has been delighting visitors at the Dunedin Botanic Garden for over 30 years. This charming tractor train offers 10-minute rides through the flat, scenic lower garden, bringing joy to locals and tourists alike while raising funds to support children in need across Dunedin.

As a driver, you’ll be responsible for operating the train safely, welcoming passengers, and helping create memorable experiences. Full training and support are provided, and once confident, you’ll have the opportunity to share a short commentary about the garden’s highlights.

This is a rewarding and social role for someone who enjoys meeting people, being outdoors, and giving back to the community in a meaningful way.

Requirements

  • A current driving licence.
  • A mature, responsible attitude and readiness to learn.
  • Ability to interact respectfully with a wide range of people, including children and visitors.
  • Trustworthy and able to handle money responsibly.
  • Tidy presentation and good communication skills.
  • Reasonably fit and mobile.
  • Willingness to give commentary once trained.
  • Not suitable for short-term commitments; ideal for recently retired or long-term volunteers.

A Police background check is required for this role.

Time commitment

  • Usually one day a week, approximately 10:00 am – 3:30/4:00 pm.
  • Currently available days are Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday.
  • Flexible scheduling is possible to suit volunteers’ availability.
