The Cancer Society offer a driving service for people undergoing cancer treatment who are unable to drive, do not have their own transport, or do not have family, whānau or friends to take them. Nationally their amazing team of volunteer drivers have helped a lot of people get to and from their cancer appointments in the past year - 948 volunteer drivers, 21,699 trips to get people to cancer treatments and 750,526Kms driven!

As part of the Cancer Society’s strong network of volunteers, you will be part of an important group of people helping a client and their supporters in the Otago Central Lakes region through their treatment.

As a Volunteer Driver you will:

  • Contact clients the night before to confirm transport arrangements
  • Collect the client from their home allowing enough time to travel to the appointment at a comfortable, safe speed arriving in time
  • Be doing so much more than getting someone from A to B, utilising your empathy and good listening skill along the way.
  • Be able to claim mileage reimbursement.

Requirements

  • This is very much a front-line role, where every journey you make will be helping someone to get the support and treatment they need, so being empathetic and a good listener is vital as you travel to and from appointments.
  • Being organised and punctual is essential, as you’ll need to liaise with clients about pick-up and drop-off times and connect in with others in the volunteer team to make sure that every assignment runs smoothly.
  • Ability to work comfortably with people of all social, religious and cultural backgrounds
  • Access to a reliable and tidy vehicle that is road-worthy, registered, insured and has a current Warrant of Fitness

A Ministry of Justice background check is required for this role.

Time commitment

  • Few hours per month, typically between 2-5 hours per assignment, depending on distance of journey.
  • Frequency varies month to month, with a pool of drivers covering needs
