August 2025
When I first moved to Alexandra after retiring, I had no idea how I wanted to spend my time—or even what local clubs or services were available. Fortunately, I found my way to the Alexandra Community Advice Network (ACAN) office, located in Community House. There, I was warmly welcomed by a group of friendly and helpful volunteers who made a lasting impression on me.
They provided a wealth of information about the local area and mentioned that they were looking for more volunteers. Since I lived out of town, I saw volunteering as a wonderful opportunity to get to know the community and become more involved. I decided to give it a go — and I am so glad I did.
Volunteering has given me a renewed sense of purpose and the chance to contribute meaningfully to the community. My advice to anyone considering it: “Give it a go—you’ll find it incredibly rewarding.” And the best part? Many volunteering opportunities do not require a long-term commitment.
About the Alexandra Community Advice Network (ACAN)
ACAN is a non-profit organisation that has been serving the Alexandra community for over 20 years. It provides free, confidential, and independent information and advice to anyone in the area. The organisation also coordinates several key community services, including:
The ACAN office is open Monday to Friday, from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm.
Supporting Local Independence: The Volunteer Drivers Scheme
Alexandra is a beautiful place to live, but it has limited public transport and no local taxi service. The Volunteer Drivers Scheme was created to support residents—particularly older individuals—who do not have access to a vehicle. This service helps people attend essential appointments such as doctors, dentists, hairdressers, or even just do their grocery shopping.
The scheme promotes independence and social connection, reducing the need to rely on friends or family. Our volunteer team is flexible—each request is sent out via email, and available volunteers simply respond to accept the ride. Volunteers can select trips based on their availability and capacity to assist clients who use walking frames or, occasionally, wheelchairs.
Delivering More Than Just Meals
ACAN also runs the Meals on Wheels program. Each weekday, three volunteers collect and deliver meals to homes throughout Alexandra. In addition to providing nutritious food, this service allows volunteers to check in on recipients—offering a valuable layer of social connection and safety for those living alone.
Make a Difference—Become a Volunteer
Without our dedicated volunteers and drivers, many in our community would struggle to access essential services or feel connected to others. If you are looking for something rewarding and meaningful, consider becoming a volunteer with ACAN.
You will be so glad you did.
