In Central Otago we run a Dementia Mate Wareware HomeShare programme for people who have mild to moderate dementia. This is a fun-based couple of hours of having morning tea, lunch and some activities. We can’t run this programme without our wonderful hosts or volunteers, who we rely on so much. One session we had recently involved Fred showing us his rock ‘n’ roll moves with Marion, one of our volunteers. This was brilliant and everyone in the group thoroughly enjoyed it. Marion is an absolute delight to work with, bringing lots of her French vibrancy and laughter to the group.

Here is why Marion volunteered, then went onto becoming a host:
“While studying dance movement therapy I had created a weekly community dance class in Cromwell. One of the participants was a host for Alzheimers Otago in Queenstown. She proposed that I come and offer a dance class which I called sensory and movement, so it aligns with everyone’s physical capacity and mobility.
I instantly fell in love with the age group and wanted to volunteer with the HomeShare Program in Cromwell on a weekly basis. Here we are six months later, creating stories and building relationships. The position for the Queenstown HomeShare host opened up, and Mary, our Cromwell host, encouraged me to interview for the job, which I got! I couldn’t be happier and more privileged to be part of this program.” - Marion
