Cancer Society CanShop Queenstown: A Little Shop With A Big Heart

When you walk into CanShop, you're walking into something that was never supposed to exist — at least not according to the numbers. No budget; no funding; no grand plan. Just a small group of people who had listened to their community and decided they wanted to do something practical to help local families affected by cancer.

The idea of opening an op-shop came about, but then the challenge became how to make it a reality. What the group lacked in funding, they made up for in determination and a willingness to ask for help. So that's exactly what they did. And the community answered.
Shelving, shop fittings, and hangers were donated by the boxful. Volunteers turned up with tools, trailers, skills, contacts, and countless hours of their time. When the doors opened in February 2015, almost everything in the shop had come from someone who cared enough to contribute.

Over a decade on, the CanShop is still here. Still run by volunteers. Still raising funds to support local families whose lives have been turned upside down by a cancer diagnosis. Still the kind of place where you might come in to drop off a bag of donations and end up staying for a conversation you didn't know you needed.

What has grown around the CanShop over the years isn't just a successful fundraising operation — it's a community of people who genuinely care about each other and about why they're there. Each person had their own reason for giving. Each became part of the story from day one.

You can feel it in the way the shop runs. In the way a new volunteer is folded into the group. In the way regulars look out for one another. In the conversations around the sorting table that have nothing to do with donated clothing and everything to do with life.
Friendships have been built here that have long outlasted any shift or season. People who arrived not knowing a soul, have left with friendships they will carry for years. Students completing their Duke of Edinburgh Award. Short-term visitors making Queenstown home for a while. People at every stage of life.

The CanShop has a way of bringing together people who might never have met, and somehow their stories become part of something bigger.

It remains, at its heart, a reflection of the community that built it. Just a little shop with a big heart.
