Every winter, as the snow blankets the slopes of Cardrona Alpine Resort, our adaptive volunteers gather to create magic. The Cardrona Adaptive Snow Sports Program has been running successfully for more than 20 years and couldn’t operate without the help of passionate volunteers who provide on-snow support for people with various physical, cognitive, and sensory abilities.

Each morning, volunteers zip up jackets, check adaptive gear, and welcome guests with wide smiles and warm encouragement. They assist, encourage, provide a safe environment, and help each guest have a great time up the mountain. Whether guiding a sit-ski or offering hands-on support, the volunteers’ impact is profound.

Dylan, a backpacker from the U.S., spends her days assisting with group lessons, helping each participant feel included and supported. Her easy-going nature and positive energy bring calm to skiers and riders, many of whom are trying something completely new.

Nearby, Ali, a retired nurse, calmly helps Ava, who has Down Syndrome, navigate the bustle of the slopes with patience and care.

Dean, a longstanding volunteer, zooms down the slopes with Caleb in the sit ski, who screams with laughter and joy.

It’s not just about skiing or snowboarding—it’s about creating possibilities, joy, and connection. The mountain becomes a place of empowerment, where limitations are left behind and courage takes the lead.

As the day winds down and the alpine glow touches the peaks, volunteers head home tired but fulfilled, knowing they’ve made a difference.
