At Central Otago REAP, we believe in the power of community, connection, and care. Our Repair and Care Cafés, run in collaboration with the Central Otago District Council, are a testament to this belief. These events are more than just opportunities to fix broken items—they’re about sharing skills, stories, and smiles.
Our volunteers are the heart of these gatherings. From sewing and knitting to electronics and bike repairs, their diverse skills breathe new life into cherished possessions. It’s not uncommon to see someone come in with a broken device and leave not only with it mended but also with newfound knowledge on how to care for it. The joy is palpable, and the buzz is contagious.
One memorable moment was when Baven Moses, an orchard worker from Vanuatu, visited the Repair and Care cafe including the Share Your Gear initiative. Initially unsure, he returned with friends, all leaving with sports gear and big smiles. It’s these connections that make our community stronger.
The ripple effect is evident. Volunteers bring friends, who in turn become volunteers themselves. Each event grows in energy and attendance, reinforcing the idea that when we come together, we can achieve remarkable things.
We’re excited to continue this journey, with upcoming cafés planned in Alexandra and Cromwell. If you have a skill to share or simply want to be part of this vibrant community, we’d love to have you join us.
