Every Tuesday and Thursday afternoon, Mat Enright and Toby Schuck pull on their skates and step into their dual roles — coaches and dads — for the U12 Dunedin Ice Hockey Penguins.
With their own kids on the ice, Mat and Toby balance parenting and coaching with quiet dedication. They guide drills, teach skills, tie skates, untangle gear, and aim to ignite the passion for Ice Hockey. Come tournament weekends (often involving a long dive) they are lugging gear, juggling snacks, game plans, and keeping the players energised.
Their commitment goes far beyond the rink. Despite already spending countless hours training and playing at an elite level for the Dunedin Thunder, Mat and Toby still make time to coach and guide the next generation. They bring experience and a lot of patience to every session, helping develop and shape the future of ice hockey in Dunedin. They show up — week after week. The Penguins are lucky to have them.
