Emma and Ted: The Heart of Homeshare, Alzheimers Otago

Emma is one of our original volunteers in Wanaka since the Dementia Mate Wareware Homeshare Programme started in 2024. Initially the programme was held at Elmslie House (Aged Care Facility) where Emma was working and had developed lovely relationships with the residents. Emma and her family kindly opened their home to us to run the programme from there.

Like so many people Emma had a family member who has Alzheimer’s and she felt compelled to help when the program first started. Emma brings a lot of laughter, fun and enthusiasm each time to the group. She knows firsthand how valuable it is that carers/partners have some well needed down time to recoup and recharge. Another reason Emma enjoys volunteering for homeshare so much is all the wonderful friendships that she has made. It is truly an honour to be in the company of these amazing people. They each have their own story to share, and everyone feels like they have an extended family when they are there. It is a safe and homely environment for all those who attend.

It is not just Emma who enjoys her time but also her good friend and companion “Ted”. Ted is a Cavaschnoodle and each week he sits, waiting at the front door for everyone to arrive, his good old buddies who give him plenty of cuddles and attention. Emma and Ted, a joint effort in making homeshare as successful as it is.
