Volunteers are the heart and soul of our community, quietly working behind the scenes to strengthen and uplift those around them.
The magic of live theatre is built on passion, artistry, and impeccable timing—but behind every dazzling performance is a dedicated team of volunteers who make it all possible. Whether working backstage or front of house, these unsung heroes give their time, energy, and expertise to ensure that every show runs smoothly, efficiently, and professionally. Their dedication allows Fine Thyme Theatre productions to flourish. They provide an invaluable service, offering their time without expectation of personal gain.
Our volunteers help preserve and promote local arts, traditions, and storytelling. They help make creative experiences accessible to the wider community and foster a shared cultural identity.
Volunteering creates bonds among people from diverse backgrounds. It brings individuals together for a common cause, turning strangers into friends and strengthening the social fabric of a community.
For many volunteers, the experience itself is transformative. It teaches empathy, leadership, responsibility, and resilience—valuable skills that shape future careers and personal lives. One act of kindness often sparks another. When people see volunteers making a difference, they’re inspired to contribute in their own way, creating a ripple effect that reaches far beyond a single event or organization.
The Magic Behind the Seams
For Erin O’Callaghan, volunteering at Fine Thyme Theatre began as a simple favour — helping backstage at her daughter’s show. Five years later, she’s become an essential part of the costume department, bringing productions to life with her hands-on creativity. Whether she’s sewing, altering, repairing, or providing last-minute dressing room support, Erin pours love and detail into every thread.
“I was roped in by my daughter,” she laughs. “And now I can’t imagine not being part of it. There’s something special about being behind the scenes with such a passionate, lively cast and crew. My favourite moment? Opening night — that mix of nerves, energy, and excitement. Seeing it all come together is absolutely electric.”
Whetu Taewa: Building Dreams, One Set at a Time
As both an actor and a local builder, Whetu brings a unique mix of skill and heart to Fine Thyme Theatre. His first brush with theatre came from a casual chat at the gym — a friend encouraging him to give it a go. Always up for a challenge, Whetu said yes, and hasn't looked back.
“It was way outside my comfort zone,” he admits. “But that’s what made it so powerful. Helping create the sets and props, turning someone’s vision into something real — it gave me a huge sense of accomplishment. And the friendships I've made? Priceless. Theatre has helped me conquer fears and connect with our community in a different way. Honestly, I tell everyone: just try it. You’ll gain far more than you give.”
A Life Member with a Full Heart
Liz Harris is a cornerstone of Fine Thyme Theatre, known not just for her performances on stage but also for her unwavering dedication behind the scenes. Her theatre journey began thanks to her niece, who boldly pitched Liz’s talents to a show director back in 2010. Since then, Liz has worn many hats — and worn them all with heart.
“What keeps me coming back? The people,” Liz shares. “There’s no ego, no agenda — just pure passion, support, and joy. It’s soul food. The connections I’ve made and the stories we’ve told together are irreplaceable.”
One standout memory? “Ladies Night. Watching local guys — many of them brand new to acting — step up, support each other, and grow in confidence was incredible. They bared their souls (and, yes, a bit more!) to a packed house night after night. It was real, hilarious, and deeply moving.”
People like these who represent so many more that remind us that theatre isn’t just about the actors on stage—it’s a collaborative effort, a labour of love, and a testament to the power of generosity.
Fine Thyme Theatre continues to thrive because of people who give their time and talents generously and without these amazing volunteers, the show simply wouldn’t go on!
