Pacific Island Trust - Papa Tere and Rongo Tending More Than Gardens

Papa Tere, volunteer working in the garden

Papa Tere and Rongo are the heart of our volunteer team at the Pacific Island Trust in Invercargill. Their kindness, generosity, and dedication shine through in everything they do. They are always the first to lend a hand and never hesitate to go the extra mile for our community.

While we have many heartwarming stories about Papa and Rongo, one that truly reflects their caring nature was when Papa’s wife called reception because he had missed his dentist appointment. When we went looking for him, we found Papa and Rongo down the road cleaning up a neighbour's section together. It was a simple moment, but it spoke volumes about their selflessness, strong work ethic, and commitment to serving others before themselves.

Through their tireless work, the gardens continue to provide fresh vegetables that help feed families in our community each week. Rain or shine, Papa Tere and Rongo are out there tending the gardens with care and consistency, making sure the produce continues to grow and give back to those who need it most. Their dedication is not only seen in the gardens they maintain, but in the lives they touch through their service.

Their contribution goes far beyond gardening. It is about nurturing the community, showing compassion in action, and quietly making a meaningful difference every single week.

We are incredibly blessed and deeply grateful to have Papa Tere and Rongo as part of the Pacific Island Trust family.
