What makes the Student Volunteer Army Otago (SVA Otago) special isn’t just what they do — it’s how they do it. They believe that every act of service is a chance to rebuild community, especially in a student city like Dunedin where many arrive seeking belonging.

In 2025, they revived their first overnight volunteer camp in three years — and it was magic. Over two days of weeding, planting, laughing, and late-night card games, a wonderful group of student volunteers from all walks of life found common ground in shared purpose. For many, it was their first time volunteering. For others, it was a chance to reconnect. For all, it reminded them: service is more than a task — it’s a pathway to joy.

Behind every planting session, NICU crochet circle, or city clean-up, there is a deeper mission: to make volunteering radically accessible. They provide transport, food, and an open-door culture because no one should be excluded from making a difference.

Their volunteers don’t just give time — they give heart. They are med students, engineers, artists, and internationals who come together not because they have to, but because they want to. That’s what makes SVA Otago unique.

Volunteering with them isn’t just rewarding — it’s transformative. One shared meal, one muddy glove, one inside joke at a time, they show that community doesn’t just happen. You build it — together.
