For the past three years, Dianne has been quietly making a difference in the lives of local families. As the very first volunteer for the Young Families Support Programme, she has continued to give generously of her time, always willing to lend a helping hand wherever it is needed. “I love it when I leave knowing I have made Mum’s day a little easier and she has a smile on her face,” says Dianne.
The Young Families Support Programme provides up to six weeks of practical support for families with children under five years old. This can include helping with household chores, preparing meals, accompanying parents and children to community groups, or simply offering an extra pair of hands during shopping trips and other everyday tasks.
Since the programme began, 14 volunteers have been recruited and trained, providing support to 28 families in the community. Dianne alone has supported five of these families, often continuing her involvement well beyond the initial six-week programme.
One parent, Yolanda, says Dianne has become an invaluable part of her family’s support network. “I wouldn’t know what to do without her. She is always there when we need someone - she just steps in. She’s a very good friend and feels like part of the family now.”
Dioni also speaks warmly about the impact Dianne has had on her family. “Honestly, she is amazing and does it from her heart. I feel she is so genuine.”
Programme facilitator Sandra says volunteers like Dianne are at the heart of the programme’s success. “Families can feel overwhelmed with the addition of young children into their homes. Having volunteers who are trusted, caring and non-judgemental can be the light at the end of the tunnel they need.”
All volunteers complete a thorough induction process and are offered ongoing opportunities to upskill and stay informed. “It’s vital that our volunteers feel valued and supported,” Sandra says.
The Young Families Support Programme continues to make a meaningful difference in the lives of local families, thanks to the generosity and compassion of volunteers like Dianne. Their willingness to give their time, care and encouragement helps families feel connected, supported and less alone during some of life’s busiest and most challenging years.
