The Dunedin Midwinter Carnival is one of the city’s most beloved and visually stunning community events. Held annually in June, this magical celebration lights up the darkest nights of winter with large-scale lanterns, costumes, music, and performance. Rooted in seasonal tradition and storytelling, the Carnival brings together artists, performers, and volunteers to create an enchanting experience for thousands of attendees. Organised by the Dunedin Midwinter Celebrations Trust, a registered charitable trust, the event is deeply community-driven and relies on the support of volunteers to bring the magic to life. Volunteers assist with everything from lantern-making and set-up to performer support and crowd guidance. Whether helping behind the scenes or in the midst of the festivities, volunteers become part of a vibrant, creative, and welcoming team. No prior experience is needed — just a good attitude, reliability, and a warm coat!
