ChatBus
ChatBus was founded by counsellor and former kindergarten teacher, Averil Pierce. Before ChatBus was created Averil's research uncovered that youth suicide in NZ was not uncommon – a point more recently thrust into the public eye, when UNICEF found that NZ has the highest youth suicide rate in the Western World*. Here at ChatBus we believe that intervention before kids experience the turbulence of adolescence and the independence of high-school, develops resilient teenagers, we now work with children at primary schools all over Dunedin and we know that our and other support that children receive results in teenagers who feel comfortable seeking help when they need it. We provide a free counseling service into the primary and intermediate schools in Dunedin, with three trained counselors travelling between schools in buses.
