Unit Leader (of Pippins, Brownies, Guides or Rangers Units)

GirlGuiding NZ is a non-profit organisation where girls can be girls, where they will discover their passions, contribute to their communities and form friendships in a safe and positive environment. They offer a non-competitive learning environment which is open-minded and values-based. It’s a supportive place to grow confident, adventurous girls who are ready to be tomorrow’s leaders.

Their mission is to empower girls to take action to change their world; they do this by using fun, adventure and friendship to build their confidence and life skills.

Volunteers are needed to run the weekly unit sessions for girls to earn badges from each age group:
Pippins: 5-7 year olds
Brownies: 7-9.5 year olds
Guides: 9.5-12.5 year olds
Rangers: 12.5-17 year olds

Units meet for up to 2 hours once a week during the school terms, with opportunities for other planned activities on the occasional weekend.
Training will be provided on how to run a unit and how to plan for a unit meeting. There is also additional training available for things such as camping.

Role includes:

  • Planning for the term
  • Delivering activities to cover the badges that the girls are working on
  • Including the girls in the planning of activities
  • Finance and budget planning
  • Record keeping
  • Liaise with team members and families


Interested volunteers should:

  • Be a positive role model for girls and leaders
  • Relate/interact well with the girls age group (from 5 - 17 years old)
  • Be encouraging, patient and assertive
  • Love being a part of the fun and activities with children
  • Be able to build lasting relationships with the children, families, other leaders and volunteers
  • Have good written/verbal communication skills
  • Be able to work as part of a team
  • Be willing to undertake further training
  • Love meeting new people, making new friends and connections

Interviews will be conducted and volunteers need 2 written character references. Own transport required. All expenses will be reimbursed

A Police background check is required for this role.

Time commitment

Weekly term time sessions run for between one and two hours with some time to prepare for the sessions. They are generally on weekday evenings and events on weekends.
