Wakatipu Senior Citizens bring together men and women who are over 60 years of age and seek companionship. We provide company and entertainment in the form of meetings and outings, have activities such as tai chi, indoor bowls and card making as well as the opportunity to learn basic computer skills. Every Friday we offer a hot lunch to members with cards afterwards. The rooms are bright and cheerful and a great space for volunteers and members to meet.
Tasks:
Volunteers provide, facilitate or participate in activities at the rooms and help with Friday lunches – food prep, setting tables, serving food and meals and clearing up/washing dishes after. The Friday sessions are the main activity for the week where Wakatipu Senior Citizens are keen to find friendly people to help.
Volunteers also accompany the manager/coordinator on outings arranged for the members and may be asked to collecting members who need transport to the rooms.
Volunteers with a particular interest or hobby are welcomed to teach this activity and share their skills with the clients.
Volunteers will learn listening and communication skills and gain satisfaction from working within a small, friendly team of volunteers who enable older people to enjoy themselves socially.
Volunteers should be a minimum of 18 years old, have good spoken English and being able to drive is useful. Volunteers should have a natural respect for older people, feel comfortable communicating with older people, be patient (i.e. when having to repeat yourself) and be a good listener. If helping on Friday some interest in food preparation, serving is useful.
Volunteers are required for a minimum of 3 months and ideally should be available to help on Friday lunchtimes .
