The Hangout Youth Centre is a vibrant and lively free drop in space for youth throughout the community who are aged between 11-18 years old (or who are in attendance in year 7 to 13). This role sees volunteers spend time engaging with young people in an informal setting focused on providing a safe and supportive environment for all youth.
Volunteers can join in with:
- pool table games
- creative arts
- cooking/baking
- chatting
- watching movies
- playing music
- enjoying card games
- and so many more activities with the tamariki and rangatahi who attend!
Listening and guiding are two fundamental principles that facilitate a positive relationship between an adult and a young person. This role would be ideal for a person who:
- is willing to be a good role model for rangatahi through positive actions
- is energetic and ready to have fun and engage with the young people
- is able to participate in creating a safe and supportive environment
- is able to demonstrate they are a trusting adult who is ready to support young people when needed
You will be supported at all times by skilled and trained Youth Workers who can provide guidance and support.
As a Youth Centre Assistant you will gain:

Time commitment
- There is some flexibility on the timing for these volunteer roles.
- You have the option of helping with breakfast club and/or helping in The Hangout after school on weekdays.
