Remarkables Runners Junior Athletics Programmes aims to provide the people of the Wakatipu with a community, in which to enjoy participation and achievement in harriers and athletics.  They strive to introduce and nurture school children’s interest in running, jumping and throwing by offering a summer athletics programme for children which includes a mix of track and field events, and encourages involvement in regional and national events.

Remarkable Runners Junior Athletics delivers training for children aged between 5-14 years.  Disciplines covered include:

  • Long Jump – 5-14years
  • High Jump – 10-14 years
  • Shot Put – 5-14years
  • Discus – 5-14 years
  • Hurdles – 10-14 years
  • Sprints – 5-14 years
  • 400m, 800m, 1500m run – 10-14 years
  • IAAF Kit Programme – 5-9 years

The children train in different events each week and every 3rd week we hold a PB (personal best) evening where the young athletes distance and times are recorded.  Their goal is to beat their PB the following time and if achieved a ribbon is awarded to acknowledge their progress.  Every Thursday the children complete 3 events each and the grades 9 and under usually focus on different events from the grades 10 and above.  Our aim is to ensure that children have fun, participate and develop great skills in athletics.

To successfully deliver the events for the children we require assistance from parents and volunteers to help run a discipline by measuring distances, time keeping, raking the sand pit between long jumps, replacing the bar at high jump, managing an event with the junior IAAF Programme and generally helping move the children from one station to another.  We require at least 2-3 adults stationed to each event and 5-6 for the sprints.  All volunteers will have a more experienced person placed at each event to help guide the delivery of the discipline.  Nobody will be left without support.

As an Event Assistant you will learn about all aspects of children’s athletics, the rules around each discipline and how to set up and manage a sport that requires a variety of events to be delivered in one evening.  You will also learn tips on how to show children the correct techniques that are required under Athletics New Zealand.
