The Central Stories Museum and Art Gallery showcases the unique stories of Central Otago. These stories include geology, early explorers, social history, gold, dredging & mining, farming, orcharding, viticulture and many more besides. As the guardians of Central Otago's rich heritage, their philosophy is to care for the cultural well-being of their community and provide the best experience they can – for locals and visitors alike.

Your day might include:

  • Greeting visitors at the front desk
  • Answering the phone and managing the diary
  • Giving information about the museum, the current and upcoming exhibitions and other services/activities that the museum provides
  • Encouraging and assisting customers with sales
  • Helping children engage with ongoing activities and competitions
  • Helping people research history in this area and/or family history

During quiet periods you may either bring a project from home or assist with other museum projects based on your skills and interests.

You will have the opportunity to:

  • see how the museum works on a day to day basis
  • be more involved in the community and our heritage
  • be involved in varied tasks, and meet lots of people
  • gain research, retail and sales experience
  • gain local historical knowledge
  • access events run by Central Stories FOC

Requirements

This role will suit someone who:

  • Has clear and concise communication skills
  • Is an excellent listener and can provide information clearly and accurately
  • Has a sunny disposition and a good sense of humour
  • Has a warm, friendly manner and good personal presentation
  • Is honest, reliable, punctual and trustworthy
  • Is able to accurately complete retail transactions
  • Has an interest in and the ability to positively promote Central Stories to the community

Time commitment

There is a 7 day / week roster with the museum open between 10-4pm. Flexible shift- can be 1 hr, or stay all day! Vacancies are also available for on-call and casual hours.

Volunteer South's office is closed from Friday 20th December until Monday January 6th. Many organisations listing roles online will also be taking a break.
