Wanaka Primary School is a learning community where we strive to make a real difference for our students within a supportive, yet dynamic atmosphere. We are looking for some friendly volunteers with a positive and and caring attitude to work alongside small groups of children during lunchtimes to answer questions, encourage, monitor and oversee activities, while keeping children on track with tasks.

Volunteer can help with a variety of tasks as described below.

In the garden:

  • Building frames to protect our soft fruit and seedlings.
  • Ongoing maintenance of vegetable gardens: weeding, growing seedlings, composting, looking after the worm farm, tool maintenance.
  • Help with composting

In the kitchen:

  • Using garden produce for cooking.
  • Guide students in following recipes
  • Ensuring health and safety practices are followed
  • Sharing food with each other

In the orchard:

  • Keeping the native orchard tidy
  • Minor maintenance from time to time
  • This can be done flexibly in your own time or during school hours with students

From this experience, the volunteer will:

  • Understand how to best work with a diverse group children
  • Gain satisfaction by helping children learn about where food comes from and how they can make our gardens sustainable.
  • Contribution to the community.

Whether you are a parent, caregiver, grandparent, neighbour- anyone from the local community who is keen to contribute their time and enthusiasm is welcome to apply.

Requirements

Ideally you are someone who:

  • Enjoys working with children
  • Has an interest in growing veggies
  • Is patient - as you will be working with children aged 5-11y
  • Have a positive and caring attitude

Some handyman skills will be needed to make/maintain the fruit cage frames, but not required to apply for the role.

A teacher will always be around to make sure children are behaving appropriately and to support the volunteer to complete activities.

A Police background check is required for this role.

Time commitment

12:45pm- 3:00pm. Join us one lunchtime a week or more - whatever time you can share they'd love to hear from you!
