Alzheimers Otago provide support, education, information and related services directly to members of their communities (family, friends and whanāu) who are affected by dementia with volunteers supporting the various programmes they run.

Alzheimers Otago facilitates the Aspiring Wanderers Club once a week, and a Coffee Club once a month for people with mild to moderate dementia. These gatherings allow members to:

  • socialise and connect with others going through similar challenges
  • gain valuable peer support
  • engage in cognitive stimulating activities
  • connect with community through local organisations and special guests

They also allows for some respite for their care partners.

Your role may involve:

  • helping with tea/coffee/lunch set up and clean up
  • facilitating conversation amongst members
  • sharing your talents
  • leading a session on a topic of interest for you
  • drive the community van to outings (optional)

The ways in which you might be able to support are limited only to our imagination. You will be provided with a Volunteer Pack and have the option of learning about dementia and interventions, and receiving falls prevention training.

Requirements

All volunteers:

  • have a heart to connect with people living with dementia in the community
  • Be ready for a good laugh or two
  • Should be willing to undertake a police check

A Police background check is required for this role.

Time commitment

  • Weekly, fortnightly or monthly - we are happy to discuss a level of commitment that works for you!
  • The Aspiring Wanderers Club meets every Thursday 10am- 1pm, with the last Thursday of each month being a Coffee Club from 10-11:30am.
  • Most gatherings begin at the Riverside Park Community Centre, 2 Heron Green, in Albert Town.
