Holmdene is an integral part of the Balclutha community, it is renowned for its quality care, wonderful food, and dedicated staff. Holmdene offers rest home and hospital level care for up to 35 residents. It is a friendly, active and supportive environment, where families are an important part of the home’s community and visitors are welcome at any time.

Holmdene is seeking people to:

  • Reading the newspaper to residents, Saturday mornings or Wednesday afternoons.
  • Helping with afternoon tea, Wednesday afternoons.
  • Help as an Activities Volunteer Assistant, Tuesday or Thursday afternoons
  • Assist with activities for the afternoon, from about 1:30 - 4:00pm Tuesdays and or Thursdays

Activities could involve 'happy hour entertainment', quiz's, reading books/papers to residents, age appropriate sports, crafts and cooking, or perhaps you have a skill you could teach to others. Assisting staff to transfer residents, in wheelchairs and lounge chairs, from their living areas to and from events within the facility. Assisting with the service of afternoon tea.

Supporting older persons in a simple, practical way is a wonderfully rewarding experience. Sharing just a little bit of your time can really make their day, and it might just make yours too. Be prepared for 'helper's high' as your volunteering can lead to a rush of euphoria and the release of endorphins!

Requirements

As you will be stepping into the 'Home' of older persons you will need to:

  • Have good communication skills (essential)
  • Be punctual and reliable
  • Have a good sense of humour
  • Be honest
  • Be friendly and empathetic to aged care
  • Have good common sense
  • Be physically fit
  • Able to assist staff to transfer residents in wheelchairs and lounge chairs, from their living areas, to and from events within the facility
  • Have a natural interest in older persons
  • Have patience, a caring and respectful attitude and be happy working as part of a team.
  • A Police background check is required for this role.

Time commitment

6 weeks or longer
Saturday Mornings - reading the newspaper.
Tuesday and Thursday afternoons - Activities Assistant; Afternoons from about 1:30 - 4:00pm
Wednesday afternoon - Reading the newspaper and helping with afternoon tea
