Living Options is a well established activity day centre in Alexandra for people from all over Central Otago with intellectual and physical disabilities. They provide a weekly cafe where they can develop their cafe skills, friendship groups, art, music groups and working in their garden.

Volunteers are needed to help the Living Options clients with their lunch making life skills. The role involves:

  • People bring their own lunch boxes to Living Options
  • Preparing, heating or toasting food out of people's lunchboxes and present on a plate so people can enjoy their lunch together at the table.
  • Supporting individuals with their lunches such as supporting them to set out their own lunches on a plate and support the person to do the necessary chopping, toasting, heating so they can learn these skills themselves
  • Getting to know people's needs in terms of individual lunches such as portion size, food consistency and temperature - this will be learnt over time.
  • Gathering up dishes and wash and sterilise and put away
  • Wash lunchboxes so people can take them home again

Volunteers will gain satisfaction in knowing they are making an invaluable contribution to the life's of the people they are supporting and helping grow their independence.

Requirements

Volunteers need to have:

  • A willingness to work with people who experience a range of disabilities and other health challenges
  • A positive and a can do attitude, sense of humour, ability to relate well to others and work as a member of a team.
  • The ability to work within the health and safety requirements of Living Options
  • The ability to be able to be flexible on the day and be open to individuals preferences and needs

A Police background check is required for this role.

Time commitment

11.45am - 1.00pm
Monday to Friday.
Individual Commitment could be 1 x weekly or more
Could suit several volunteers across the week
