Op Shop Team

Organisation:

SPCA Queenstown

Category:

Retail

Hours:

Both/Flexible

Locations:

Queenstown

SPCA is a voluntary organisation set up by the people in the community who are interested in and want to do something about the welfare of animals. “We speak for those who cannot speak for themselves”. The Op Shops around the country raises essential funds to support the welfare work of the organisation, and volunteers play a big part in keeping them going.

The Queenstown Op Shop on Gorge Rd is looking for enthusiastic and passionate individuals who care about the welfare of all animals, and giving pre-loved items a new life. There are both front of house and back of house/project style tasks you can get involved in. Full training will be supplied and you will have support so the roles and tasks are fulfilling for you!

Front of House role includes:

  • greeting customers and general awesome retail customer service
  • use of our POS/EFTPOS system
  • tidying the racks, stockroom and change rooms
  • merchandising and rotating stock
  • sorting and grading donations - including clothing, homeware, linen, books, bric-a-brac, etc.
  • assisting customers with donation
  • other duties as required and agreed

Back of house/Project Options

  • Electronics, (cleaning them, tinkering, getting them ready for tag testing)
  • The Book Corner (Sorting arranging and pricing)
  • General cleaning and organising: vacuum, dust, clean, organise and keep the kitchen tidy, help with laundry
  • A footwear specialist (the shoes need cleaned re-laced and the slippers washed)
  • Ironing/drying (we will have a brand new washing machine and dryer installed soon)
  • Mending Clothes (clothes that are good enough to sell but need a little mending)
  • In the store, or wherever is comfortable, this may lead to some fun things)

Why volunteer with SPCA? There will always be a store manager around to support you in your role, and if you are keen, train you in other volunteer tasks. You will enjoy connecting with the community and other volunteers. You are welcome to do the roles with a friend if the tasks are suitable for more than one person. You will also gain an insight into retail and satisfaction from raising money for the SPCA.

If you can donate your time to this cause, it is as important to them as any physical donation - without the generous support of the community they would not be able to continue the good work the SPCA has done in New Zealand over the past 125 years.

Requirements

Volunteers need to be 18 and over and are required to complete a mandatory Health and Safety induction.

  • Some retail or Op Shop experience would be advantageous, but not essential.
  • Skills as required by the tasks above
  • Mainly a willingness to learn and a passion for the cause

Please indicate the tasks you wish to help with in your application below.

Time commitment

  • 3 hours is a good length of time for a shift and suits most volunteers, however they are happy to chat about what would suit you best.
  • Open seven days a week from 9-5pm so the volunteering can happen within these hours
  • Plan the days in advance with the managers (at least a week's notice), so they can have projects and work planned out for you to do.

Getting started

The first step is to express your interest by filling out the form below. We will then put you in touch directly with the organisation for more information on the role and how to proceed.

Ref: 2176

Volunteer South's office is closed from Friday 20th December until Monday January 6th. Many organisations listing roles online will also be taking a break. During this time your requests to connect will go through, however there may be some delay in you hearing from the organisations you select. Please be patient and if you have not heard back from them by mid January email them directly and give them a nudge. Thank you and have a wonderful holiday season and summer.
