Hospice Southland's Hospice Shop in (based in Invercargil) is one of seven shops in Southland and the Wakatipu region. Hospice Shops are a treasure trove of donated items which help them to fulfil their motto of 'Sustainable Shopping for Sustainable Care'. Hospice Southland provides Specialist Palliative Care Service and their philosophy affirms life and offers dignity and hope.

Funds generated from Hospice Shop sales are used to run a six bed In-Patient Unit, that cares for around 120 patients. Hospice's palliative care focuses on ensuring quality of life by responding to each patients physical, emotional and spiritual needs are met. Family life is also deeply affected when a loved one has a life-limiting illness, so support for families is an intrinsic part of Hospice care.

As part of the retail sales team you will:

  • Be provided with an induction by the Shop Manager
  • Greet and interact with customers
  • Answer customer questions about merchandise
  • Collect payments using the stores point of sale system
  • Perform other related duties such as tidying and cleaning
  • Receive deliveries and with some lifting of items
  • Work in a team alongside others
  • Ocassionally accompany staff to pick up donations in a van
  • Some lifting involved - but arrangements made for those who can't

  • Good interpersonal/people skills (friendly and aproachable)
  • Effective verbal communication
  • Active listening skills
  • Good with numbers, basic addition and subtraction
  • Excellent sales and customer service manner

Requirements

This role would suit someone who:

  • Initial 1 hour induction: 1st part: Organisation and mission + 2nd part: Shop operations
  • Enjoys meeting new people
  • Previous front of shop skills (e.g. serving customers at the till) is an advantage
    (but full training will be provided for the right person)
  • Possesses effective verbal communication skills
  • Enjoys unpacking and cleaning donated items
  • Can arrange and sort clothes on racks and clean donated items
  • Can receive deliveries and help with the collection/pick-up of items

A Police background check is required for this role.
