Hospice Southland’s Hospice Shop (based in Invercargill) is one of six shops across Southland and the Wakatipu region.
Hospice Shops are a treasure trove of donated goods, helping bring their motto of “Sustainable Shopping for Sustainable Care” to life while connecting our communities to the vital work of hospice.

Hospice Southland provides Specialist Palliative Care Services, affirming life and offering dignity, comfort, and hope to patients and their families. Funds generated through our Hospice Shops directly support our six-bed In-Patient Unit and community services, caring for around 120 patients and their whānau each year.

Palliative care focuses on quality of life by responding to each patient’s physical, emotional, and spiritual needs, while also supporting families through one of life’s most challenging journeys. Their volunteers play a vital role in making this care possible and strengthening the connection between hospice and the community.

As part of the Hospice Shop volunteer team, you are not just supporting retail - you are helping lead community-powered care and bringing volunteering to the forefront of our organisation and communities.

In this role you will:

  • Greet and connect with customers, creating a warm and inclusive environment
  • Support customers with questions about merchandise and purchases
  • Use the point-of-sale system to process payments (training provided)
  • Help maintain a tidy, organised, and inviting shop space
  • Assist with receiving and sorting donations (with lifting support available where needed)
  • Work collaboratively as part of a supportive volunteer and staff team
  • Occasionally assist with donation pickups alongside staff (optional)

What Volunteers Gain:

  • Retail and customer service training, experience, and ongoing support
  • A meaningful opportunity to represent Hospice Southland in the community
  • The chance to build confidence, skills, and connections
  • A welcoming and supportive team environment
  • The opportunity to contribute directly to sustainable fundraising and patient care
  • The knowledge that your time and effort help provide compassionate palliative care to patients and families across Southland

The Impact:
Volunteers in Hospice Shops are community leaders in action. Through your time, presence, and connection with customers, you help create sustainable funding, build community awareness, and ensure Hospice Southland can continue providing care, dignity, and support to those who need it most.
